The Challenge:

Several challenges can arise when working with a database on an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance:

⦿ Setting up the database: Depending on the database you are using; it may take some time and effort to set it up and configure it properly on the EC2 instance.

⦿ Securing the database: It is important to ensure that the database is secure and that only authorized users have access to it. This can involve setting up proper authentication and access controls, as well as regularly applying security patches and updates.

⦿ Backing up and restoring data: It is important to regularly back up your database to ensure that you have a copy of your data in case of an unforeseen event. Restoring the database from a backup can also be a challenge, especially if the backup is large or if the database has changed significantly since the backup was taken.

⦿ Performance and scalability: As your database grows in size and usage, it may become necessary to scale it up or optimize its performance to ensure that it can handle the workload. This can be a challenge, especially if you are not familiar with database performance tuning.

⦿ Managing database updates and upgrades: As new versions of your database are released; you may need to upgrade the version running on your EC2 instance. This can be a complex process, especially if there are compatibility issues or if the upgrade requires significant changes to your database schema.

Provided Partner Solution:

We recommended migrating the MS SQL server to Aws rds. For our use case, we take the standalone scenario in which our SQL Server database engine runs on Amazon EC2, and see how we migrate the user databases to Amazon RDS for SQL Server using SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio). The following diagram illustrates our solution architecture.
